How to Find Cheap Christmas Flights and Save on Holiday Travel

Thinking about Christmas already brings celebration, holiday travel, and gathering. Christmas week is the busiest time for airlines, and ticket prices usually rise because many people want to fly. Planning gives you time to compare prices, test different dates and find cheap Christmas flights instead of settling for whatever seats remain. This guide covers when to book, how Christmas Eve and Christmas Day compare, the busiest days, practical ways to save and how to compare US airlines.

When Is the Best Time to Buy Flights for Christmas?

When to Buy Christmas Flights for the Best Fares

So, when is the best time to buy Christmas flights? Google's 2026 holiday travel report indicates the low fare window is 33 to 67 days out with the cheapest fares generally being around 56 days out.

For a Dec. 25 departure, that window runs from about Oct. 19 to Nov. 22. You are still inside it, though the 56-day mark fell on Oct. 30.

How Early Should You Book Christmas Plane Tickets?

The best time to book your Christmas flight tickets can vary depending on where you are flying. Previous patterns don't dictate the future. If you want the best deal on Christmas flights, start looking at ticket prices as soon as they become available.

International trips may need more lead time. Google puts the typical low-fare point for international travel around 89 days out- book when a fare fits your budget, because waiting for a bigger drop is a gamble.

Are Flights Cheaper on Christmas Day?

Sometimes, but not always. Are flights cheaper on Christmas Day? Demand can ease on the holiday itself, yet fewer departures can also mean fewer choices. Prices vary by route, airline and date.

Is Flying on Christmas Eve Cheaper?

Compare Christmas Eve with the flight prior to the Christmas celebration, i.e. December 22nd or 23rd. Boston.com reported in 2024 that fares the weekend before Christmas were much higher than those on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. That was one year's pattern, not a rule. If you must leave on Dec. 24, check evening departures too.

Cheap Flights on Christmas Day: What all Travelers Should Know

If you're after cheap flights on Christmas Day, then check both your departure and return dates. If your travel dates are flexible, try using a flexible date calendar to compare nonstop and one-stop flights. Remember, a cheap ticket isn’t worth it if it means missing dinner with your family or rushing to catch your next flight.

What Are the Busiest Travel Days Around Christmas?

Demand for Christmas holiday flights typically climbs in the days before Dec. 25 and again when travelers head home. The busiest travel days around Christmas are the weekend before Christmas and the days immediately after, though the peaks move with the calendar. Christmas falls on a Friday this year. If your schedule allows, price a trip in the quieter stretch between Christmas and New Year's, such as midweek, and compare it with returning right after the holiday.

Christmas Flight Deals

• Set a fare alert early. Track your route before the booking window opens. Then book when the fare fits your price range.
• Shift your dates by a day or two. As per Google data, you can save up to 14% by flying out on Monday and coming back on Tuesday or Wednesday instead of traveling on the weekend. For domestic trips, you can save up to 20% as compared to flying round-trip on Sunday.
• Check nearby airports. A drive to a second airport can change the fare, so price both before you decide.
• Book quiet departure times. Early morning or late evening flights can be cheaper than those at midday. Compare, since this varies by route.
• Consider a connection. Google says non-stop flights are on average about 20% more expensive. Weigh that against missed-connection risk.
• Watch for sales. Check airline sites for promotions before you pay.
• Stack your savings. Combine flexible dates, a nearby airport, an off-peak time and any promo fare, then compare total cost.

Compare Holiday Flight Deals Before Booking
